Pycnogenol is:
(1) a trademarked compound extracted from the bark of the French maritime pine tree that contains proanthocyanidins.
(2) Pycnogenol is also the name of a group of compounds that contain proanthocyanidins taken from other natural sources such as grape seeds.

There are several other pine bark extract supplements available in addition to the brand called pycnogenol, which may use different types of pine bark and have different formulations.

THE HISTORY BEHIND IT:

In 1535, French explorer Jacques Cartier's ship was ice-bound in the St. Lawrence River, in Quebec. The crew began developing scurvy. An Indian told them how to prepare a tea made of bark from an "Anneda" tree, a large tree with evergreen leaves and a bark that was easy to remove. Crew members recovered, and attributed miraculous qualities to the tea. The needles contained a small amount of vitamin C and the bark contained fIavonols.

In 1951, French researcher Dr. Jacques Masquelier reportedly read Cartier's writings, and began a search for the active ingredients in the tea. He extracted proanthocyanidins from the bark of the European coastal pine tree. He patented it & named it Pycnogenol. [NOT A NORTH AMERICAN TREE LIKE CARTIER'S; OTHER SOURCES ("ALTERNATIVES") THEREFORE RELEVANT]

In 1970, proanthocyanidins were also extracted from grape seeds. The compound found in grape seeds and plants is referred to as either proanthocyanidins or pycnogenol. However, it differs somewhat from the pycnogenol extracted by Dr. Masquelier.

GRAPE SEEDS:
Both pine bark and grape seed contain high levels of OPC, the Active Ingredient in Pycnogenol. Grape seed commonly yields an extract that is 92-95% pure OPC compared to the pine bark's lower potency of 85%. Grape seed extract contains gallic esters which are the active, yet identified plant-derived free radical scavengers.

• Grape seed extract was found to be a more effective antioxidant and free-radical scavenger than either vitamin C, vitamin E, or beta-carotene.

• The typical dosage of grape seed extract is about 50 to 200 miligrams a day, providing a daily dose of up to 150 miligrams of proanthocyanidins. The extract is available in capsules or tablets. Commercial grape seed products are often labeled as containing OPCs -- oligomeric proanthocyanidins.

Protect your back when you swim: Sometimes lower back pain can be caused from swimming when the muscles in the lower back become hyper extended, or over stretched, during the breaststroke or other forward stokes. In addition to hyper extension of the lower back, the cervical spine, or upper spine and neck, can also become injured while swimming.

• Repetitive jerking motions of the head during frontward stokes could also seriously injure the area. The neck and cervical spine are particularly prone to injury while swimming. The anatomy of this area of the spine is very complex and is composed of seven vertebrae surrounding the spinal cord, which extends downward from the brain. Stretching outward from the spinal cord are nerves which travel to muscles and other tissue throughout the body.

To prevent back pain while swimming, it's crucial that you use proper form and techniques. Unnatural or awkward movements while swimming can easily damage tissue through the back, so it's important to maintain the correct stokes and movements.

• Swimming with sidestrokes or backstrokes can also minimize stress on the back when compared with frontward strokes. When doing the front crawl or other forward strokes, make sure to roll your body when taking a breath and avoid jerking the head backwards so that you can reduce strain on the neck. Wearing a mask or goggles can also reduce unintentionally jerky head movements while trying to get water out of the eyes. Boards, life vests, or other types of floatation devices can also help maintain proper form while swimming.

If you are actively involved with swimming and are experiencing neck or back pain, seek the advice of a coach or more experienced swimmer. If they spot you while swimming, they may be able to determine if something is wrong with your strokes and can advise you on proper technique.

• tuck your head in and don't have it extended outward from your body.
• make sure you do not rotate your head too much when taking breaths. Do not let your head move up too much or deviate from the axis along the length of the body. When you're not going up for breathes make sure you keep your head looking downwards. Rolling too much can easily lead to damage.
• For the breaststroke, keep your head and neck still, while gently raising the head and back to take breathes.

When back pain becomes a problem there are several methods to help relieve discomfort:
Stretching, icing, and asperin.

If swimming continues to be painful it's important to stop and seek the advice of a physician in order to stop back pain. Problem: Windows 98 SE won't install a video/graphics card upgrade in my dual-boot PC running Windows XP and Windows 98 SE:

I have a dual-boot PC that runs Windows XP and Windows 98 SE. I upgraded the graphics from a 16MB PCI Voodoo video card to an 128MB AGP nVidia GeForce FX5200 card. I downloaded the device drivers for the upgrade from nVidia.com for both versions of Windows, shut the system down, removed the old card and installed the upgrade. When I booted into Windows XP, the card was recognised, the drivers were installed, and the card worked properly. However, when I booted into Windows 98 SE, the card was recognised, but I could only boot into Safe mode. When I try a normal boot, I get a blank screen and the computer either hangs or closes itself down. Is there any way in which I could install both video cards so that I can use the new card with Windows XP and the old one with Windows 98 SE?

Answer: Yes, you should be able to have both cards installed, because Windows 98 and Windows XP have separate hardware lists. Just open the Device Manager in each version of Windows and and disable the card that you don't want to use with that version. In Windows XP, right-click on the Voodoo card's entry and click Disable on the menu that presents itself. When you open the entry for the nVidia GeForce FX5200 card in Safe mode in Windows 98, look for the option that disables that card.

Unless you make use of a KVM switch that allows you to connect two video cables and switch between them, you'll have to swap the video cable every time you change the operating system. If you have a second monitor, you could have a two-monitor setup, probably in both versions of Windows, but at least in Windows XP.

You could also try using the nVidia card in Windows 98 with the standard Windows Super VGA driver, which would use a screen resolution of only 800x600, but it might be adequate for your needs.

Of course, it would be best if you could use drivers that allow you to run the nVidia card in Windows 98. You could try looking at this site for suitable drivers: http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/. Search under Downloads if this link doesn't work:

Selecting the Best Resistor

Carbon-Film resistors are one of the earliest forms and remain the most popular general- purpose type in use today.

Metal-Oxide Film resistors are ideal where space is critical. They are stable and reliable and have low noise characteristics. Treatment of their outer surface makes them resistant to flame, solvents, heat and humidity

Precision Metal-Film resistors, as their name implies, are temperature-stable, low–noise types for more demanding digital and analog instruments.

Wire -wound resistors are made by winding a resistive wire on a ceramic core and placed and sealed in a ceramic shell. They are more durable than other types and have high heat dissipation ratings. Because of their wire construction their inductance makes them unsuitable for many AC applications.

Resistors are utilized to limit current flow and reduce voltage for other applications.

Has some low-level hum or hiss duing quiet passages. Static during first 10 seconds when warming-up. The gain on this modulator is quite weak - I have to turn my stereo way up from normal FM station volume. Beware of the volume adjustment on the back. The adjustment on the first box I bought completely broke off. don't buy this product if you are obsessed with Crystal clear CD quality. Both the highs and lows are diminished.

It has a bad upper frequency dropoff that I haven't found a way to adjust for. If I boost the treble on either my input device or my stereo it just sounds funny and messes up my settings for listening to radio/cassette.

I redid the install and ran new power line from the fuse box and ran a new ground line to a very sound ground. I used 14 awg wire, which is thicker than needed. I then moved the modulator from directly behind the radio to lower in the center stack. I shortened all the wires (power, ground, switch) as short as practicable. I soldered all joints.
Now, there is no detectable hiss and about 70% of the whine is gone. audible only on very soft songs when I turn the volume up higher. I would urge using an ignition switched power source, not the lighter.

if you have noise be sure to ground everything right, and if that still doesn't solve the noise problem, get a GLI (Ground loop isolator) from Radio Shack.

The 1998 ballot question was tossed out by the Supreme Judicial Court, saying it wasn't fair to BONDHOLDERS who counted on the toll revenue to pay off the Pike's debt to them.

In 1952, the Legislature provided for the creation of the Mass Turnpike Authority and equipped it with a mandate: to build a road, ensure its quality and DISSOLVE ITSELF UPON THE PAYMENT OF OUTSTANDING BONDS issued to pay for construction of the road.

Here's the loophole in the law: "When all bonds issued under the provisions of this act...have been paid...the turnpike, if then in good condition...shall become part of the state highway system and shall thereafter be maintained and operated by said department free of tolls...and thereupon the authority shall be dissolved."

The Mass Turnpike Authority has PERPETUATED ITS EXISTENCE BY FLOATING NEW BONDS in defiance of the 1952 law. On seven occasions - in 1954, 1962, 1968, 1984, 1986, 1989 and 1993 -- it sold bonds extending its life well beyond the period contemplated by the Legislature. The 1993 bond issue for $365 million extends the life of the authority wwll into the 21st century.

Toll cessation is continually defeated on the grounds that it will hurt the Turnpike Authority's bondholders. Why should this matter? No one consults General Motors bondholders before imposing safety or environmental standards that might hurt car sales.

So, WHEN AN AUTHORITY FLOATS BONDS, IT ACQUIRES IMMUNITY to attempts to hold it accountable to its mandate or to constitutional restrictions.

The book "Shadow Government" by Donald Axelrod shows how governmental authorities repeatedly turn back legal challenges by invoking the sanctity of bond agreements. A New York court stated that "the obvious purpose behind the creation of many such (governmental authorities) has been the indirect achievement of some purpose that the state cannot achieve directly because of various constitutional limitations placed upon the state."

I bought this Durabrand MP3/CD player as a low-cost replacement to my previous CD/MP3 player to listen to mp3 CD's on my commute. I liked the fact that this player can read mp3 CDs with normal directory names and files. Some others require special names or read only from the root directory.

excruciatingly slow fast-forward. To return to where I left-off within a 10 minute audiobook track, it seriously took 1 minute of fast-forwarding time to advance about 4 minutes of playback.

The other negative was the excessive number of skips and pops. [PROBABLY REFERING TO THE "SKEWING" EFFECT] Some of my MP3/CDs that played fine in other players had far more skips and pops when played in this Durabrand player.

Finally, there is no memory of where you last stopped playback. This was a feature of my previous mp3/CD player from a bigger name brand. With at least 12 hours, and hundreds of tracks of audio on an mp3 CD it is very useful to have the player remember at least the track if not the exact position you were on when you last stopped the player. This is not a feature of this player. Hit stop, and you will have to find your own way back to the last track played.
